Kitchen in Vietnamese is nhà bếp.

Bếp means stove. Some related words you may see are:

  • Bếp ga, which means gas stove.
  • Bếp điện, which means electric stove.

As previously mentioned in my other posts, in Vietnamese language, objects are often identified first before they are described. That is why when we want to say gas stove for example, we say bếp first to identify that it is the stove that we talking about then we say ga to indicate that this is a stove that uses gas. As a result, bếp ga means gas stove. And bếp điện means electric stove.

Tủ lạnh

Tủ lạnh means refrigerator. When we use the word “tủ lạnh,” we mean the whole refrigerator unit, including the freezer, if it comes with the refrigerator as a unit.

In English, when we say refrigerator or fridge, we mean either the whole refrigerator unit or the cooling section of a refrigerator-freezer unit. However, when we say we go shopping for a refrigerator, we are often looking for a refrigerator-freezer unit.

In Vietnamese, we have different words for the whole refridgerator-freezer unit and the cooling section of a refrigerator unit.

  • Tủ lạnh refers to the whole refrigerator unit.
  • Ngăn lạnh refers to the cooling section or the cooling storage in the refrigerator(-freezer) unit.
  • Ngăn đá refers to the freezer section of the refrigerator unit.

Lò vi sóng means microwave.

Máy rửa chén

Máy rửa chén means dishwasher.

The word máy means machine in Vietnamese.

Rửa means to wash.

We have previously learned that chén means small bowl(s). However, rửa chén doesn’t mean that you wash only the small bowls. When someone says rửa chén, they mean to wash all the dishes.

Now can you guess what máy rửa chén means? That’s right. It means a machine that washes dishes, in other words, dishwasher.
