Toilet paper can be called giấy vệ sinh or giấy đi cầu in Vietnamese. However, giấy đi cầu is a very informal way to say toilet paper.

Now that you’ve learned some bathroom vocabulary, let’s learn some common phrases related to the bathroom.

Common phrases

How do you say “take a shower” or “take a bath” in Vietnamese? We say “đi tắm.” With “đi” means go, đi tắm literally means go shower. If you want to be specific that you are going to use the bath to wash yourself, you can say “tắm bồn” or “đi tắm bồn.”

Usually you just need to say đi tắm and people will understand that you are going to the bathroom to wash yourself by either taking a shower or taking a bath. We do not specify in our daily conversation whether we are going to use a bath or a shower.

I only say tắm bồn or đi tắm bồn to my family when I mean to say I am going to use the bathtub and it may take a while.

What if you need to use the toilet? In general, if you want to say that you need to use the bathroom or the toilet, you can say đi vệ sinh. If you want to be informal and more specific, you can say đi tiểu (go pee) or đi cầu (go poo). There are various ways of saying you need to go poo in Vietnamese just like in English, from informal to very informal, but here we are just going to
