Notice that “Anh” means United Kingdom in the list above. In the post Addressing people: Why “I” doesn’t simply mean “tôi” and “you” doesn’t mean “bạn” in Vietnamese, we learned that “anh” is a word we use to address ourselves and others. However, when “Anh” has capitalized “A,” unless it is someone’s name or it is at the beginning of a sentence, it always means the United Kingdom.
Some countries may have different names in Vietnamese other than the ones listed in the table above. For example, the Philippines is also called “Phi Luật Tân” in Vietnamese. However, this is an old name that was used before 1975. The names listed above are the ones that are more commonly used these days among younger generations.
Countries
Most of the time, when you mention the name of the country by itself, people already know you are talking about the country. But if you want to emphasize that you’re talking about the country, you can also add “nước” in front of the name of the country.
The word “nước” has two meanings. “Nước” means water but it also means country. When “nước” is in front of any of the words in the table above, it means country.
Let’s look at the examples below:
“Tôi đến từ nước Anh.”
In the first example, “cho tôi một ly nước” means “Give me a cup of water.” “Nước” in this example means water.
In the second example, “tôi đến từ nước Anh” means “I came from the United Kingdom.” “Nước” in this example means country.
Let’s take a look at how “nước” is used to emphasize country with the words from the above table.

Nationalities
Nationality or nationalities is called “quốc tịch” in Vietnamese.
“Người” means human, person or people, but when you put the word “người” in front of the name of a country, it refers to the nationality.
For example:
“Nhật Bản” means Japan. “Người Nhật Bản” means Japanese.

Languages
The word “language” in Vietnamese is called “ngôn ngữ.”
To refer to a language, you can put the word “tiếng” in front of the name of the country, the same way you use nước and người.
Let’s take a look at the examples below.
“Nước Việt Nam” means Vietnam.
“Người Việt” or “người Việt Nam” means Vietnamese person or people.
“Tiếng Việt” or “tiếng Việt Nam” means Vietnamese language.
The word “tiếng” has multiple meanings. “Tiếng” means voice, language or hour; however, when “tiếng” is in front of a name of a country, it only means language.

It is important to know that you cannot put the word “tiếng” in front of the name of every country out there. The reason is that some countries do not have a unique language.
For example, Australians speak English; therefore, their language would be “tiếng Anh” and not “tiếng Úc.”
Another example is Switzerland. There are four main languages spoken in Switzerland. They are German, Italian, French, and Romansh. Therefore, the languages spoken in Switzerland are “tiếng Đức,” “tiếng Ý,” “tiếng Pháp” and “tiếng Romansh,” not “tiếng Thụy Sĩ.”
Some of the names of the languages are often shortened. For example, people often say tiếng Nhật instead of tiếng Nhật Bản, tiếng Trung instead of tiếng Trung Quốc, and tiếng Hàn instead of tiếng Hàn Quốc.

In order to say different countries, nationalities and languages in Vietnamese, we first need to remember the names of the countries in Vietnamese then add the word nước, người or tiếng in front of the names of the countries to address countries, nationalities, and languages.
